Pro Arte Quartet

The Pro Arte Quartet, originally founded in Brussels in 1912, became affiliated with the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1940. Stranded in the U.S. during World War II, the ensemble established a long-term residency at the university, becoming the first string quartet-in-residence at an American university. Known for their performances of both classical and contemporary works, the Pro Arte Quartet has significantly contributed to the cultural and academic environment of Madison, fostering a rich tradition of chamber music.
