Ricardo González is a Cuban-born American who became a significant figure in Madison’s cultural and political landscape. He founded The Cardinal Bar in 1975, which became a landmark LGBTQ+ venue and the nation’s longest-running nightclub upon its closure. González also made history as the first openly gay Latino elected to public office in the United States, serving on Madison’s Common Council.
