José J. Madera serves as Secretary of the Madison Area Music Association, bringing more than two decades of experience in student advocacy, academic leadership, and community engagement at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. As Assistant Director of the STEM Scholars Program within the College of Letters & Science’s Center for Academic Excellence, José works to expand access, retention, and graduation rates for underrepresented students pursuing STEM majors. His work also supports students preparing for graduate school, law school, and health‑profession pathways, helping diversify the next generation of scholars and professionals.
Born and raised in Santa Isabel, Puerto Rico, José holds a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Puerto Rico–Cayey and an M.S. in Water Resources Management (Water Chemistry) from UW–Madison, where he also pursued doctoral studies in Soil Science. His academic and professional journey reflects a lifelong commitment to creating safe, supportive, and opportunity‑rich environments for students of all backgrounds.
José’s leadership extends beyond the university. He previously served as Vice Chair of the Madison Children’s Museum Board of Directors, and he continues to be an active contributor to community organizations focused on youth development, education, and the arts. A talented percussionist with deep roots in Afro‑Caribbean music, José has performed with ensembles across Puerto Rico and Wisconsin, including BENTETÚ, Trova Viva, MadiSalsa, and El Maderazo. His musical background gives him a personal connection to MAMA’s mission and a firsthand understanding of the transformative power of access to instruments and arts education.
At MAMA, José brings a detail‑oriented, student‑centered perspective to board governance, communication, and organizational strategy. His dedication to equity, mentorship, and community building helps strengthen MAMA’s efforts to ensure that every child who needs an instrument has access to one — and to the opportunities that music can unlock.
