Clyde Stubblefield

Clyde Stubblefield (1943–2017), dubbed “The Funky Drummer,” was a pioneering percussionist best known for his work with James Brown, including the iconic drum break in “Funky Drummer,” one of the most sampled rhythms in music history. After moving to Madison in 1971, he became a local legend, performing weekly with his band and contributing to public radio’s “Whad’Ya Know?” Despite his global influence, Stubblefield remained a humble figure, dedicated to his craft and community. His legacy endures through the Clyde Stubblefield Scholarship Fund, supporting young musicians.
